ELLIS PATENTS REINFORCES GLOBAL APPEAL AT CIGRE

Yorkshire-based cable cleat manufacturer, Ellis Patents reinforced its growing reputation on the world stage during the recent 2010 CIGRE (International Council on Large Electric Systems) Session in Paris.

Held at the Palais des Congrès de Paris from August 23rd to 27th, Ellis Patents presented a paper on the “Fixing arrangements and accessories for flexibly installed HV cable systems in underground cable tunnels” in a special report session on insulated cables. In addition they attracted visitors from 26 countries, including Cameroon, Slovenia and Thailand, during the five days of the concurrently running CIGRE Exhibition.

Richard Shaw, managing director of Ellis Patents, said: “In recent years one of our key aims has been to develop a reputation on the world stage for our technical expertise by championing correct cleating practice and the need for short circuit testing. It is therefore extremely rewarding to attend an event with truly global appeal and find ourselves seen by so many different people and companies as the cable cleat experts.”

Ellis Patents’ academic paper, which was written in conjunction with Balfour Beatty, outlined the importance of short circuit testing high voltage cleats and suggested a standard test protocol, and was selected for presentation by the CIGRE approval board ahead of hundreds of other submissions.

“The role of the cable cleat in any electrical installation is of paramount importance and having the paper selected for the Session provided us with a wonderful opportunity to communicate this message directly to those responsible for the installation of HV underground tunnels in locations across the world,” continued Richard.

This is the second time Ellis Patents has presented an academic paper to an international audience. In 2004 the team presented a paper entitled “Cable cleats – a global technique to protect three-phase single conductor cables during short-circuits” to the Petroleum and Chemical Industry Committee in San Francisco.

The CIGRE Session is a biennial event, which is always held in Paris. It is the organisations most important event and brings together over 3,000 delegates from across the globe.
